High tech Nissan ZEOD RC ready for Le Mans

To prepare for their 2015 LM P1 class debut in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nissan has been doing extensive testing on the ZEOD RC, which will be racing in this year’s event in a few weeks.

The car’s nose cone and tub were put through crash tests to ensure that they met FIA regulations. The carbon fiber structure held up well, and the nose cone crumpled as expected to absorb energy in a head on collision.

Nissan’s ZEOD RC will be raced by three-time Japanese Super GT winner Satoshi Motoyama and two winners of the Nissan GT Academy, Lucas Ordonez and Wolfgang Reip. Other previous GT Academy winners will be racing in other Nissan racecars in the 24 hour endurance race.

This is a new hybrid electric drivetrain for Nissan, and showcases what the company can do with electric technology and advanced small displacement, turbocharged engines. The setup combines lithium ion battery packs powering...

More cars get 40+ mpg than ever before

There are a growing number of cars that can reach 40 mpg on the highway, as fuel prices continue to rise. In 2010, there was only one gasoline-only powered car that reached that magic number, the ultra-compact Smart Fortwo. Now that number has grown to 12, and next year will probably bring more.

A few of the models on the list have already been out for a year or two, and can be found pre-owned with low miles for a sizeable discount at places such as Enterprise Car Sales. The cars range from inexpensive subcompacts to well-equipped midsize sedans.

Brand new for 2014 are the 44 mpg highway Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Sentra FE+, Nissan Versa and Toyota Corolla Eco. These vehicles are all able to achieve incredible fuel efficiency with advanced CVT transmissions, which offer a few more miles per gallon when compared to their manual transmission variants.

The Mazda3 and Mazda6 are on the...

Prices dropping for pre-owned cars

During your search for a used or pre-owned car, you may want to turn your focus to five car segments that will soon get much cheaper. According to Black Book, a car value data company, cars in certain segments are expected to drop in value this month and through July, as tax refund season ends.

Vehicles from the entry and upper mid-size, full-size, full-size crossover and compact car segments are expected to drop in value over the coming months. Average prices are expected to drop anywhere between 3.4 and 5.9 percent during this period, depending on the segment.

Models in the luxury sedan and crossover segments are a particularly great buy right now, as many have depreciated quickly over the last few years. With prices falling over 15 percent since the same time last year, the dream of owning a luxury car may not be too far off from reality.

The best deals can be found on the...

Car detailing tips from experts

Keeping your car clean is very important, whether your car is brand new or has been your daily driver for decades. There are hundreds or products on the market for cleaning your car, and thousands of places you can take your vehicle to get it detailed.

The auto experts at Edmunds.com put together a list of tips for making sure that your car stays in top shape, no matter what method you decide on.

They recommend not taking your car in to a detailer every time it needs a wash. Going to a car detailer can be pricey, and there are many ways to save money by doing some light detailing on your own at home. They recommend washing once a week and waxing once a month, and making sure that the products you use are suited to your car’s paint, interior materials and wheel type.

Another suggestion is if you are going to take your car to a detailer, make sure that they see your car before giving...

What are today’s online education trends?

In the past three years, online education has seen a steady growth, and is projected to continue growing as students look for a way to get their education on their own terms. Students live their lives differently today, being constantly on the go and consuming media differently than their parents ever did.

What are the trends today in online education? Media startup company Tech Cocktail put together what they think are this year’s four top projected learning trends for online universities.

The first is ‘learning on the go,’ as students want to be able to study for tests or read material on their smartphone or tablet whenever they please. Being able to see results instantly and multitask is important to today’s students, and will be even more important as smartphone adoption increases.

Next is ‘learning at the speed of need,’ which is allowing students to learn material in short...

There is a Ford Mustang on top of the Empire State Building

In April of 1964, Ford unveiled the first ever Mustang convertible on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building during the World’s Fair. The stunt was no easy task though, as the car had to be carefully dismantled to make it up the building’s freight elevator. For the new 2015 Mustang convertible, Ford has recreated the stunt.

Celebrating the Mustang’s 50th anniversary, Ford has once again put a Mustang convertible on the observation deck of the Empire State Building. The car is in bright triple yellow paint and over 1,000 feet above the New York City streets. Just like in 1964, the convertible had to be cut into pieces before it could make the ride up the elevator, as airlifting the car would be impossible.

A company called DST figured out the details on how to get the new Mustang on top of the city’s tallest building. They built a mock up of the freight elevators...

Better fuel efficiency with Toyota’s new engines

In order to keep up with rising fuel economy demands, Toyota unveiled two new engines today that will help improve fuel economy by 10 percent. The new engines will be offered in 14 different variants and will be in nearly 30 percent of Toyota products worldwide, as reported by Automotive News.

These all-new engines are relatively small in size, coming in at 1.3 and 1.0 liters. By switching to the Atkinson burning cycle for combustion, used for years in the Toyota Prius engine, the new gasoline engines save fuel. This works by opening the intake valves briefly during the compression stroke.

Engineers at Toyota say these new engines can be used with hybrid powertrains, direct-injection and turbocharging to help boost the output of the engines to provide more power. Rivals Honda and Mazda have been working hard to revamp their engines in recent years, using technology such as direct...

New Nissan taxi is at home in New York City

With Nissan continuing to move their way into the quickly growing small cargo van segment with the new NV200, the van already has been living on New York City streets since last fall. Nissan is the exclusive supplier of taxis to the city now, after they won with their Taxi of Tomorrow design two years ago.

The Taxi of Tomorrow is a long departure from the gas guzzling full-size sedans and cramped hybrids that have been the de facto taxi choices since the legendary Checker cab was phased out last century.
