Universities adapting to use new technologies

Technology’s importance in how we live and work is constantly growing and changing, and using it effectively in higher education has become more important than ever. Recently, the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) met in Yokohama, Japan to discuss the changes needed in higher education in regards to technology.

This year’s program theme was “Creating the Future of Higher Education,” and it focused on how universities around the world can change to stay current with the use of technology in the workplace. Being responsive to students and their changing needs is what is going to keep university education relevant, no matter the country, degree type or level of education.

Today’s graduates are being asked to know so much more information right out of school, and need to be able to demonstrate skills that will be beneficial to the company’s future. Though...

Used cars for first time drivers

It is currently prime used car shopping season, as used cars are finally beginning to see drops in price after years of being higher than average. It is also perfect timing for teens looking to get their first car, especially for those needing a vehicle for college in the next few months. Business Insider ranked what they think are the 10 best cars for first-time drivers, and it is quite the eclectic list.

On the list starting things off is an older vehicle, the 1976 to 1996 Mercedes-Benz Diesel sedans and wagons. These cars are used around the world as taxis due to their extraordinary reliability, decent fuel economy and classic Mercedes luxury. They can be found for very little money, and surprisingly don’t cost a ton to work on. These old cars are tanks and are not something you want your car to be hit by, something this author knows from personal experience.

When it comes to SUVs...

Online College helps students earn PhDs

Unlike many colleges where the school year is over after the end of the semester or quarter, online colleges such as Trident University are about to start their next session in the summer. And it’s not just Bachelor’s degrees that are available to earn online, as Master’s Ph.D. degrees can be earned as well in a number of fields.

And unlike MOOCs (massive open online courses) where there is no interaction between the professor and the students, PhD students are given an online environment which includes small class sizes and the opportunity to engage with faculty and conduct research. Students are able to pursue research in the area of their choosing, giving them the opportunity to make a contribution to the academic community at large.

The fields of study that you can go into with an online doctorate program are impressive as well. For example, Trident’s College of Business...

No rearview mirrors for Nissan at Le Mans

120639_1_5.jpg

The historic 24 Hours of Le Mans race is this weekend, and Nissan has been hard at work with their experimental ZEOD race car. Nissan is the first manufacturer of the modern era to run a lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe without rear view mirrors during testing this week.

The ZEOD race car is part of the Garage 56 program, which allows manufacturers and private entrants to compete with a car that has new technology not seen before at Le Mans. Nissan’s ZEOD uses a 400-hp three cylinder engine with a hybrid powertrain, which will allow the car to run the first ever all-electric lap of the famous circuit.

A car without rearview mirrors is unusual at Le Mans, as they have been required for all other entrants for years. Nissan instead is using a Smart Mirror, which uses rear facing cameras and radar detection to give a better view to the driver of upcoming traffic. If another car is coming...

Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge closer to production

infiniti-details-q50-eau-rouge-concept-photo-585817-s-787x481.jpg

When Infiniti unveiled their Q50 Eau Rouge concept car, both automotive journalists and performance car enthusiasts fell in love with it. The Nissan GT-R’s engine and drivetrain were shoehorned into the Q50 luxury sedan, making a sports sedan with supercar power and handling, and it seems the car may actually be nearing production.

Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen said in an interview with Motor Trend that he was pushing the Eau Rouge for production, and that the production version would be very close to what was seen in the concept. The production version will likely have the seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system from the Infiniti Q70, but will keep the twin-turbo 3.8 liter V6 from the GT-R.

The production Q50 Eau Rouge is expected to cost around $100,000, which is right around what the Nissan GT-R costs currently. This puts the Eau Rouge nearly $40,000...

Ford hosts teen safe driving forum

FORD_SV3_9332.jpg

Ford Motor Company along with their Ford Driving Skills for Life program held a safe-driving forum in Queens, New York last week. The discussion and events were targeted toward teens and parents, and focused on life-saving driving skills and information.

Less than 10 years ago, the problems that face new teen drivers weren’t even a thought. Smartphones are in the hands of nearly every teenager, and wearable technology looks to be the next big thing that may grow in popularity. An informal survey done by one of the panelists at the forum found that mothers are now more concerned about their child being hurt or killed by a distracted driver than a drunk driver.

Laws have been passed to try and stop people from using their phones and other electronic devices when behind the wheel, but setting a good example for new drivers is even more important.

“We need parents to start educating...

Ford is reinventing the car battery

lead-vs-lithium.jpg

For more than a century, the car battery has remained virtually unchanged in design. The lead-acid battery was invented in the mid-1800s, and has proven to be the most reliable way to start your car for about a century. With advances in batteries in everything from smartphones to electric cars, you would think there must be a more efficient way to start a car.

Ford Motor Company and Samsung SDI have been working for the last decade on a next-generation battery using more modern technology. By combining newer lithium-ion batteries with traditional lead-acid batteries, they have created a battery that is more efficient, lighter weight, smaller and more powerful.

The primary application of this new battery technology will be to replace the old lead-acid batteries found in almost every non-hybrid or electric car on the planet. The more energy dense design allows it to be much lighter...

6123892769_9fd6451484.jpg

The largest areas of job growth in the United States include health care and health care administration. Healthcare professionals with a strong education are in high demand, and the job market for these types of jobs is expected to grow even more over the next few years.

A big issue with getting a college education though is the amount of time it takes out of your schedule, and the rising costs of tuition. For many, leaving a full time job to pursue a new career is not possible. Today, more and more students are turning to online education to get the education and degree they need to be successful.

Online universities including Trident even offer PhD degrees in health sciences in a number of fields, including global health researcher and health care administration. Just like with any doctorate program, the work required will be very challenging, but the payoff is great, and the...
