Used cars for first time drivers

It is currently prime used car shopping season, as used cars are finally beginning to see drops in price after years of being higher than average. It is also perfect timing for teens looking to get their first car, especially for those needing a vehicle for college in the next few months. Business Insider ranked what they think are the 10 best cars for first-time drivers, and it is quite the eclectic list.

On the list starting things off is an older vehicle, the 1976 to 1996 Mercedes-Benz Diesel sedans and wagons. These cars are used around the world as taxis due to their extraordinary reliability, decent fuel economy and classic Mercedes luxury. They can be found for very little money, and surprisingly don’t cost a ton to work on. These old cars are tanks and are not something you want your car to be hit by, something this author knows from personal experience.

When it comes to SUVs and trucks, they recommend the Honda CR-V, Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Highlander. These three vehicles have proven themselves to be extremely reliable, and don’t cost much to fix when they break. Gas mileage may not be the best, but for moving a lot of stuff around for cheap, you can’t do much better.

Being fun is sometimes more important than practicality, which makes the Toyota Celica, Ford Mustang and Lexus IS300 solid choices. The Celica gets over 30 mpg while still being fun to toss around, but can be a bit unrefined when it comes to comfort. The Mustang and IS300 have plenty of power and offer decent fuel economy, and stand up well to the test of time.

Just want something comfortable to get you from point A to point B without much hassle? Then take a look at the Honda Civic, Ford Fusion and Acura RL. You may need to pay a little more up front to get one in good shape, but they all should offer years of relatively trouble free motoring. Good condition late model cars can be found for reasonable prices at places like Enterprise Car Sales and other nationwide used car outlets.
