Better fuel efficiency with Toyota’s new engines

In order to keep up with rising fuel economy demands, Toyota unveiled two new engines today that will help improve fuel economy by 10 percent. The new engines will be offered in 14 different variants and will be in nearly 30 percent of Toyota products worldwide, as reported by Automotive News.

These all-new engines are relatively small in size, coming in at 1.3 and 1.0 liters. By switching to the Atkinson burning cycle for combustion, used for years in the Toyota Prius engine, the new gasoline engines save fuel. This works by opening the intake valves briefly during the compression stroke.

Engineers at Toyota say these new engines can be used with hybrid powertrains, direct-injection and turbocharging to help boost the output of the engines to provide more power. Rivals Honda and Mazda have been working hard to revamp their engines in recent years, using technology such as direct injection and high combustion ratios.

To improve fuel economy further, the new engines will also use stop-start technology, where the engine shuts down when the vehicle comes to a complete stop. To experience this technology today, take a look at any Toyota Prius model, such as at http://www.primetoyotanorth.com/prius/Saco. With ever-increasing fuel economy standards, it is technology like this that will keep the internal combustion engine living.
