Ford earns eco-friendly awards with new F-150

There have been a large number of eco-branded pickup trucks hitting the market in the past few years, claiming to offer truck drivers better fuel economy and a lower cost of ownership. Automakers are using everything from turbocharging to lightweight aluminum body panels to improve efficiency.

This year, the Automotive Science Group (ASG) put together a test to find out which new trucks “actually earn their eco badge.” The study examined 245 light-duty pickup trucks, taking into account engines, transmissions, cab type and trim level to get the most comprehensive results.

The 2014 Ford F-150 with the 3.7 liter V6 in both Regular and Crew Cab varieties won their highest award of “Best All-Around Performance.” ASG says the F-150 demonstrated superiority in all aspects, including environmental, economic and social performance.

The eco-friendly F-150 also won ASG’s “Best Social Performance” award, based on Ford’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, and “Best Economic Performance” for the Extended Cab pickup category. And with new aluminum body F-150’s arriving soon, the efficiency of the best-selling F-150 will only improve.
