Designing the exhaust note for the 2015 Ford Mustang
When Ford was developing the all-new 2015 Mustang, they had the challenge of creating unique and powerful sounding exhaust notes for all three different engine options. Each had to have a character all its own, while still letting the driver know and feel that they were driving a Mustang.
Powertrain noise, vibration and harshness engineer Shawn Carney was tasked with making sure every new Mustang sounds like a Mustang should. A lot of work was put into making the rest of the Mustang quieter than ever, so making sure the engine sounds just right was very important.
With the all-new 2.3 liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine, the Mustang team knew they wouldn’t be able to get the exhaust to sound like the V8, so they decided to give it a unique sound. They benchmarked a number of cars to find what others had to offer, then Carney put together the notes he felt were most appropriate for the character of the EcoBoost Mustang.
The result was a refined exhaust note that sounds like a modern engine, while still having the distinctive low-frequency American growl of the V6 and V8 Mustangs. To combat any unwanted noise in the cabin, engineers used the audio system to generate opposing sound waves to cancel out unwanted frequencies. In addition to numerous improvements to the smoothness of the powertrain, the 2015 Ford Mustang will be a great car to drive and listen to.
